Our Academic Approach
OUR APPROACH
Strong Foundations. Unhurried Learning.
Our academic program is built around two goals: to teach children to read, write, and think with real skill, and to protect time for focused, distraction-free learning.
We use explicit, structured instruction in phonics, reading, writing, and mathematics. That means direct teaching, clear expectations, and consistent practice. Not worksheets, busy work, or passive screen time. There are no personal devices in the classroom. Students leave knowing how to learn, not just how to perform.
Movement is part of that process. In a small, one-room setting and the surrounding land, children sit, stand, move, and work with their hands throughout the day. Learning is active and engaged, aligned with how children are wired.
The result is students who are confident, attentive, and truly known.
We Are a Technology-Free School
There are no tablets, smartboards, or screens in our classroom. This is a deliberate choice, not a budget constraint. Research consistently shows that children build stronger cognitive skills (attention, memory, language, and reasoning) through hands-on, relational learning. We take that seriously.
DAILY RHYTHM
What a Typical School Day Looks Like
Morning Opening
The day begins with a brief prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a short Bible reading. It sets the tone for the day, fostering gratitude and leadership.
Core Academic Time
Students work in small groups on phonics, reading, writing, and math. Because the class is small, the teacher works with each group while others practice independently. Every child gets face time, not just classroom time.
Enrichment & Applied Learning
Afternoons are dedicated to the subjects that make learning come alive: science, art, nature study, and life skills. These are not extras, but essential pathways for helping children think broadly and connect ideas. Through time outdoors and on the adjacent hobby farm (The Onyx Manor), students engage in life science, zoology, and ecology—planting, tending, harvesting, and preserving food, as well as learning to care for animals firsthand.
Community Time & Character
Students of different ages work together, help each other, and build real relationships. One of the genuine advantages of a one-room school.
What We Teach
Reading & Language Arts
Structured phonics, reading comprehension, handwriting, composition, and spelling are taught explicitly and to mastery.
Mathematics & Problem Solving
Math is taught concretely first, then abstractly. Students build genuine understanding before moving on, not memorization without meaning.
Social Studies & Science
History is a story worth knowing. Science is the study of a world worth marveling at. Both are taught with accuracy, depth, and a Christian perspective.
Character Development
Daily Bible reading and discussion is woven naturally into the school day. Students learn to think through the lens of Christian faith.
